The Shiraz/Viognier blend originated in the Rhône valley, but the success and popularity of the Australian versions have made the blend virtually synonymous with this New World giant. Small Gully is a boutique winery established in 1999 by Darren Zimmermann, whose family has been growing top-quality grapes in these vineyards for nearly 85 years, and Robert Bader. You can expect classic dark Barossa fruit and pepper notes from the Shiraz here, accented by a lifted floral note provided by the Viognier. This will be superb with a grilled pepper steak or gourmet burger.
Tasting Note: Good value here in an Aussie shiraz with quite lifted, dazzling savoury aromatics. Love the rosemary, pepper, blackcurrant and pencil lead elements on the nose. The slightly edgy theme continues on the palate, which is medium-full bodied, fairly dense, sour-edged and warm, but carries the same savoury notes to excellent length. Best 2016 to 2020. Score - 89.
