Tasting Note: Girard's is exceptional petite sirah, ripe and dark but not tannic as hell. After tasting through two vintages of cabernet sauvignon and one old vines zinfandel the thread of clarity is coming into view. Girard's unique acidity circulates and encapsulates its fruit, safeguarding, protecting and elevating its personality. What it means in terms of structure is nothing less than fantastic aging potential. The fruit is sourced from old vine plantings at Godward Vineyard in the Calistoga region as well as Julianna and Calla Lily vineyard in the Pope Valley region of Napa. Some of that old vine fruit is in fact (22 per cent) zinfandel as noted in the bramble and the dark berry near-jam. A healthy level of pH (3.47) works with the forceful acidity so that drying and family-separating tannin does not have to be the alpha male in the relationship. Balance is what keeps this petite sirah from either cloying or damaging behaviour. It is a highly impressive showing. Drink 2018-2027. Score - 93. (Michael Godel, winealign.com, March 5, 2017)
